Short answer

For a lost or spare Mercedes key in Atlanta, a mobile specialist is usually cheaper than the dealer, with no tow. On FBS3 cars, most from about 2003 to 2014, we make the key on site the same day. On FBS4 cars, from about 2015 on, we order the same factory key for your VIN through NASTF and bring it to you. The dealer still wins when a warranty, a recall or a key protection plan pays. Mercedes Key Programming tells you which case you're in on the first call.

When the dealer is the better choice

Go to the dealer when the key or the ignition is covered, or when the car is already there. In those cases it's the honest answer, and we'll give it to you on the phone.

  • Warranty or recall. If your car is under a warranty or recall that covers the key or the ignition switch, the dealer may do it for free or close to it.
  • A key protection plan. Some owners bought key coverage with the car. Read the terms first: it often pays only at the dealer.
  • The car is already in for service. If it's sitting at the dealer anyway, adding a key may cost you less time.

When one of these fits, we won't drive out just to tell you no.

What changed is FBS4. Most models from about 2015 on, like the W205 C-Class, W213 E-Class, W222 S-Class, X253 GLC and W167 GLE, use it. For those, the dealer orders a factory key for your VIN and needs the car in its shop, which means a tow if no key is left. We order that same factory key through NASTF and bring it to you.

Both usually take one day to a week. The newest generations, like the W206 C-Class or a 2019 or later Sprinter, are a call with your VIN. You can also check your model and year.

When a Mercedes key specialist is better

Call a Mercedes key specialist when the car can't wait, can't move, or you'd rather not pay dealer prices.

  • You lost every key. No key means no driving, so the dealer route adds a tow. We program a new key where the car is parked, in Atlanta or the suburbs.
  • The dealer gave you a long wait. Dealers often need one day to a week because they order the key for your VIN. Our FBS3 jobs are usually done the same day.
  • Your car is FBS4 and no key is left. We order the factory key through NASTF and program it where the car sits, so the tow disappears.
  • You want a spare before it's an emergency. A copy from a working key is the cheapest job there is.
  • Price matters. Independent specialists usually charge 30% to 50% less than the dealer for the same key.

Not every locksmith can do a Mercedes. Ask if they're NASTF VSP registered and if they work on Mercedes every day. Mercedes-Benz is all we do. For the full process, see our lost Mercedes key guide or how our mobile Mercedes locksmith service works.

Dealer vs. specialist FAQ

Is it cheaper to get a Mercedes key from a locksmith or the dealership?

A specialist locksmith is usually cheaper. Dealers in Atlanta commonly quote about $400 to $1,000 or more, and independent specialists tend to run 30% to 50% less. With Mercedes Key Programming you also skip the tow. See prices by model in our Mercedes key cost guide.

Can a regular locksmith program a Mercedes-Benz key?

Not always. Many general locksmiths don't have the Mercedes equipment or the NASTF access to the security data some jobs need. Before anyone drives out, ask if they program Mercedes keys often and if they're NASTF VSP registered. We do only Mercedes-Benz.

The dealer says my Mercedes key will take days. Is anyone faster in Atlanta?

Yes, if your car is FBS3: a mobile Mercedes key specialist can usually make and program that key the same day. Mercedes Key Programming arrives in about 30 minutes across Atlanta. On an FBS4 car our factory key also takes one day to a week, but we bring it to you, so there's no tow and no service appointment.

Do I have to tow my Mercedes to the dealer if I lost the key?

No. On an FBS3 car a mobile specialist programs a new key right there, so you skip the tow, which runs about $100 to $200 around Atlanta. On an FBS4 car, most from about 2015 on, we order a factory key through NASTF and program it where the car sits, so no tow there either.

Do I have to go to the Mercedes dealer for a new key?

No. On an FBS3 Mercedes, most models from about 2003 to 2014, we program a new key where the car is parked, the same day. On FBS4 cars, most from about 2015 on, we order a factory key for your VIN through NASTF and bring it to you, usually in one day to a week.

Why does the dealer take so long for a Mercedes key?

Because the dealer often orders the key from Mercedes-Benz for your VIN and then needs the car on site to program it. Shipping plus a service appointment is why it takes one day to a week.

Is a specialist key as good as the dealer's?

It depends on the key you get, so ask whether it's original (OEM) or aftermarket. We tell you which key we install and why before the job, and we test every function in front of you before we leave.

When should I choose the Mercedes dealer?

Choose the dealer when a warranty, a recall or a key protection plan pays for the key, or when the car is already in its shop. A newer car isn't a reason by itself: on FBS4 cars we order the same factory key through NASTF and bring it to you. In any other case, compare the price and the wait first.
