Mercedes-Benz Key Fob Replacement and Programming in Atlanta

A Mercedes fob that stops working doesn't always need replacing. Check the battery first. If that's not it, Mercedes Key Programming tests the fob at your car in Atlanta and tells you whether it needs a new shell, reprogramming or a new key.

Is it the battery, the fob or the car?

Most of the time it's the battery, and that costs you a few minutes, not a new key. Run through this before you call:

  • Range dropped: the buttons only work up close, or only sometimes. That's the classic weak battery. Swap it for the same coin cell printed on the old one.
  • Spare works fine: if your second key opens and starts the car, the car is OK and the problem is in that one fob.
  • Case is cracked or a button is loose: the electronics may be fine. A new shell can fix it.
  • Neither key works: now it's likely the car side, often the ignition switch. Read our page on EIS problems.
  • Fob was dropped in water or crushed: expect a new key. On an FBS3 car we program it at your car the same day; on an FBS4 car we order a factory key for your VIN and bring it to you.

Still stuck? Call (470) 229-2853 and describe what the fob does and doesn't do. We'll tell you what we think it is before we drive out.

FBS3 vs. FBS4: why it matters for your fob

FBS3 and FBS4 are the two drive authorization systems behind a Mercedes key, and we handle both, in different ways. FBS3 covers most models from about 2003 to 2014: we cut and program the new key at your car, the same day. Most cars from about 2015 on use FBS4: as a NASTF registered Vehicle Security Professional, we order a factory key for your VIN and deliver it.

The FBS4 key usually takes one day to a week to arrive, and your car stays put in the meantime. Newer generations, like the W206 C-Class or the X254 GLC, are a call with your VIN: we check before we promise anything.

The model year gives a first hint, but years overlap at the change. We confirm the system with your VIN on the first call, or you can check your model and year before you call. Price ranges by model are in the Mercedes key cost guide.

Key fob FAQ

How much does it cost to replace a Mercedes-Benz key fob?

Our fob replacements for FBS3 cars start at $249, and a spare for a car that still has a working key starts at $249. Dealers in Atlanta commonly quote about $400 to $1,000 or more. Independent specialists usually charge 30% to 50% less than that. For FBS4 cars we order a factory key and give you the exact price on the call.

My Mercedes key stopped working. Do I need a new one or just reprogramming?

Often neither. A weak battery is the most common reason a SmartKey quits, so replace it first. If the fob still fails, we test it at your car: sometimes it only needs a new shell or reprogramming, and sometimes it needs a new key: made on site for FBS3 cars, ordered from the factory for FBS4 cars.

What are FBS3 and FBS4?

They're generations of the Mercedes-Benz drive authorization system that the key talks to. FBS3 covers most models from about 2003 to 2014, and we make new keys for it. FBS4 is on most cars from about 2015 on, and for those we order a factory key for your VIN through NASTF. We check which one you have by VIN first.

Can you replace just the fob shell?

Yes, if the electronics inside still work. A new shell fixes a cracked case, a worn button or a broken blade holder. If the board is damaged, the key has to be replaced instead: on site for FBS3 cars, with a factory key we order for FBS4 cars.

Do you program Mercedes fobs on site?

Yes, on FBS3 cars. We program the fob at your car, at home or at work, anywhere in our Atlanta service area. FBS4 cars take longer: we order the factory key for your VIN and set it up at your car when it arrives. See also spare Mercedes keys.
